Patrick Henry married his wife Sarah Shelton at Rural Plains in 1754. 110 years later, Rural Plains stood in the crossfire at Topomotamy Creek Battlefield during the Civil War. The building was largly unscathed during the battle, and the Shelton family continued to live in the house until 2006 until it was donated to the National Park Service.
