Abner Baptist Church features a roadside marker honoring Rev. John Preston Clarke, a Black minister who helped build Black Baptist churches across central Virginia. In addition to Abner, he is linked to seven other still-active congregations—Bethany, Ebenezer, Fifth Baptist, Greenwood, Mount Olive, St. James, and Shiloh—reflecting his wider role in organizing post–Civil War Black religious life.
